It’s hard to believe that when we bought this ho It’s hard to believe that when we bought this house, this was a solid wall between the kitchen and living room. The kitchen was completely closed off to the living room, making the kitchen feel really tiny. And because the kitchen doesn’t have any windows, it also felt very dark. Now that it’s open to the living room and breakfast room, the kitchen feels about twice as big as it originally did (even though the size is the same as it always has been), and it gets plenty of natural light through the windows in the neighboring rooms. The difference that one cased opening can make is truly amazing!

Today on the blog, I shared five home improvement Today on the blog, I shared five home improvement projects that I did in our home that gave me the most bang for the buck. One of them was adding cased openings. I'm not really a fan of open floor plans, but when we bought our house, the kitchen felt really closed off to all of the other rooms. And since the kitchen doesn't have any windows, it felt really small and dark.

Adding two cased openings -- one between the kitchen and the breakfast room, and one between the kitchen and living room -- made a huge difference. It allowed natural light into the kitchen from the windows in the adjoining rooms, and it also made the rather small kitchen feel about twice as big.

I still need to finish some projects on the front I still need to finish some projects on the front porch, but it's come a long way! Swipe to see what it looked like before. We got new siding and closed up one of the two doors on the front porch. Then I built a wood porch that floats over the concrete porch, wrapped (new) posts to make pretty columns, and built new, wider steps. I’m hoping to finish the unfinished projects this spring.

Would you ever try making your own backsplash tile Would you ever try making your own backsplash tiles? With resin, the possibilities are virtually endless. You can buy cheap tiles and then paint them, use alcohol inks, decoupage them with a patterned paper—so many ways to get a custom look! Then just coat them with resin for durability, and install them like normal tiles using unsanded grout. You’ll have truly one-of-a-kind tiles in your home.
